Mystic Chichen Itza
Chichen Itza, once the greatest capital of the ancient Mayan civilization, is today one of the Seven Wonders of the World, and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visiting its grounds is a privilege. We will be astonished by the Pyramid of Kukulkán (The Plumed Serpent), a master theological and astronomical piece. We will admire the largest Ball Court in Mesoamerica (168 meters in lengths and 70 meters wide) and the Observatory. Further on, we will also visit the Temple of a 1000 Columns. All of them magnificent. The heart of the place, Kukulkán, was built to produce a mesmerizing spectacle twice a year. During the Spring and Fall Equinoxes (March 21 & September 22) the sun projects an undulating pattern of light over the architectonic features of the building (Northern stairway), which resembles a massive serpent snaking down the structure. Gatherings to up to 30,000 visit from all over the world to witness this phenomena. “Wow!” is an understatement.
Tour Information
This will be a long day, so we will start very early to avoid crowds and beat the midday heat. After a few hours exploring this majestic archaeological site, we will take you to cool off at a great cenote (crystal clear, fresh water sinkholes unique to the Yucatan peninsula.). Then, get ready for a great Yucatecan meal in the food market in one of the oldest colonial cities in the Americas. You guessed right, the city of Valladolid. Take some time to chill out strolling around the Zocalo (main square), and enjoy the chance for unique shopping.
An unusual but unforgettable sidebar on the way to Valladolid is a stop at their local prison, where you can purchase the best quality and fair-priced hammocks in the Yucatan, handmade by the prisoners. These are sold at the entrance of the building, no plans to go inside.
